ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 is the latest gaming laptop product from the line that is considered very attractive to the mobile market.
TUF Gaming is a new line from ASUS which is a level below the ROG (Republic of Gamers) for users who want to have a high-performance laptop to play games than most mainstream laptops but have more limited funds.
Then if the FX505 laptop as the latest model of the line can again win the hearts of the gamers? Following is the review of ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 from the MyBestDeal team.

ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 has a design that is still somewhat similar compared to its predecessor with some overhaul here and there. Character designs that characterize TUF laptops such as trapezoidal pieces on the cover and lines that form X are more highlighted in this version.
The gray cover with aluminum material and the ASUS gold logo give a soft and soft appearance but also look premium at the same time. At first glance the appearance is not as striking as most gaming laptops so it is still appropriate to be taken to formal places such as lectures.
The body feels sturdy even though the whole is made of quite thick plastic. Not surprisingly, this laptop has been equipped with MIL-STD-810G certificate which means it has passed the Military Grade test. This ensures the laptop will be resistant to shocks, humidity, solar radiation, altitude, and extreme temperatures.
This laptop is quite large with dimensions of 360.4 x 262.0 x 25.8 mm and weighs around 2.2 kg. Therefore, make sure you have enough bags to store them when you want to travel. This large size is actually still fairly reasonable for a gaming laptop in its class but it will be something to consider for those who prefer a sleek laptop.
The gaming side of this new laptop will really be seen when opening it. The keyboard with RGB backlit and transparent WASD keys are different from other keys. There are several modes of RGB effects that can be chosen starting from Static, Breathing, Color Cycle, to Strobing so that it can be adjusted to your taste.
Unfortunately, this RGB backlit is only available in the FX505 Gold Steel variant, while for the other variants, only the typical red laptop gaming backlit is available. Even so other variants in my opinion are no less cool.
For the keyboard itself, it’s quite good to be used to play games but it still feels unsatisfactory to type for a long time because the surface is flexible so the surrounding area feels down when pressed
Asus chose to provide a full keyboard layout on this laptop which certainly would be quite helpful in playing some games. One thing that makes me a little surprised is the arrow keys slightly protruded downward which makes me have to get used to because more often accidentally pressing the numpad.
Under the keyboard there is a large enough touchpad that is comfortable to use when not carrying an additional mouse. Its surface makes it easy for fingers to scroll and click left and right to feel tactile.
Problem connectivity, this laptop provides a fairly complete port starting from USB 3.1, USB 2.0, HDMI 2.0, RJ45, and 3.5 mm audio jack. All ports are available on the left while the right is not any port except for the kensington lock.
Screen and Audio
ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 has a 15.6-inch wide screen with Full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution with 100% color coverage of sRGB gamut. Do not miss the anti-glare coating to minimize distracting light reflection.
As an ASUS laptop released in 2018, the screen uses the NanoEdge design which has a thin bezel of only 6.5 mm. Even so the bezel is still quite thick when compared with other ASUS laptops in 2018 that offer NanoEdge screens.
To accompany the screen, ASUS also embed audio that is not less cool. TUF Gaming FX505 is equipped with DTS Surround Sound technology that provides more realistic audio with virtual 7.1 surround that will simulate where the sound comes from.
After playing games and watching movies with headphones, I can say that the virtual surround effect is very good and makes the playing experience feel more like being in it. Unfortunately, in my opinion the virtual surround is less pronounced when using speakers.
Performance and Gaming
The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505GE-I7T61T has an Intel Core i7-8750H processor with speeds up to 3.9 GHz which gives 23% better performance than the previous generation. At the same time there is also an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics card for heavier graphics processing needs.
This laptop has 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM, but unfortunately only a single channel. Of course there are still slots available to activate dual channel and increase the maximum capacity to 32GB for those who want it.
Concerning storage, this laptop offers a dual storage solution with 128GB PCIe Gen 3 SSD for the operating system and 1TB capacity 7200RPM SATA HDD to store personal data. This combination is still the most optimal in my opinion because it gives a better overall performance but does not make the price too inflated.
In normal daily use, the performance provided by FX505 is unquestionable. All the activities that I do on this laptop feel very responsive and fast whether it’s just enjoying multimedia content, browsing, or running office applications.
It can also be seen from the results of trials of several popular benchmark applications that simulate the performance needed in general.
ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 is able to score around 4,423 on PCMark 10 while for PCMark 8 get a score of 4,977 for Work Accelerated mode.
Then how is the performance if taken to play games?
There are several games that I immediately tried to see its ability to run games that need heavier processor performance, detailed graphics, and AAA class games.

The first game that I tried was GTA 5, which until now is still one of the most popular games that has a very large number of active players. This one game requires heavier processor performance because a lot of calculations are needed considering this game offers an open world.
In Very High graphics settings and native 1080p resolution, the ASUS FX505 is able to run GTA 5 very smoothly with FPS always above 60 without ever dropping below it while I tried. CPU usage is only around 50%, whereas GPUs are seen to be overwhelmed with 90% usage and VRAM remaining only 0.9GB.
Rise of the Tomb Raider

Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the games that is quite heavy especially when using the highest quality graphics. This game has a very detailed texture so it will require high VRAM in presets above High and appropriate performance to be able to process it smoothly.
To test it, I immediately tried to run this game with Very High presets. As a result the game is still able to run fairly smoothly with an average FPS that can almost touch 40 FPS even for the Geothermal Valley area which can be said to be the place that most requires performance.
Using the benchmark test provided immediately shows the same thing. The results show this laptop is able to run this game in a range of 36 – 47 FPS. One interesting thing, the temperature heat generated rarely touches 90 degrees Celsius as when playing GTA 5.
After trying to directly play using this laptop then I can say that the performance presented by ASUS TUF Gaming FX505 is indeed very capable to be brought to play games especially if you only play eSport games like DOTA2 or CS: GO which is fairly not heavy.
The 7.1 surround virtual audio capability on this laptop also supports providing a more immersive gaming experience. These 2 features will certainly also be very useful for those of you who play competitively.
The internal temperature of this laptop is indeed quite high when I have to work very hard, but fortunately it is not too felt on the surface of the laptop thanks to the excellent exhaust of air. FX505 even allows for use on the thighs while using thick pants such as jeans.
The sound from the fan itself is quite loud, but still within reasonable limits. There are three fan modes to choose from, namely Silent, Balance and Overboost, each of which has its own advantages so that it can be adjusted to your activities.
One of the concerns of gaming laptops is the battery life, which is often below the average laptop in general. Of course this is fairly reasonable considering the need for electricity that is not small to be able to produce high performance so gaming laptops are recommended to be connected to a power source in order to provide maximum performance.
However, of course, better battery life must continue to be sought because not a few also want to be able to use a gaming laptop in daily activities such as college. Then what about this latest TUF Gaming?
Benchmark results from the PCMark 8 application with Work accelerated mode that simulate office activities show that this laptop is able to turn on for 3 hours 11 minutes. The number is fairly good because it is slightly above the average mainstream laptop.
It’s the same when I use it directly in my daily life. This laptop lasts for 3 hours 13 minutes until the remaining 10% battery when I use it for work, watching streaming video, listening to music, or just browsing. Surely the endurance will be much decreased if used to play games.
To charge the battery, I have to wait for about 1 hour and 30 minutes while I use it to be fully charged from the remaining 10% capacity.
Seeing from these results, you do not need to worry too much when you have to carry this laptop without being connected to a power source because it can still pass lecture classes or short meetings without problems.
ASUS RUG TUF Gaming FX505 is a powerful gaming laptop ranging from fast performance to playing the latest games, battery life above the average laptop in general, to the body has a military grade certificate.
This laptop also has very many features to enhance user experience. The surround audio feature enhances the high performance offered by this laptop. These things will make your playing experience more immersive.
Even so this laptop is not without flaws. This laptop keyboard feels unsatisfactory for typing for a long time and its size is relatively large which might make some people think twice.
In addition, the laptop as a whole is very solid to have. All function and run very well. There are no complaints that make me frustrated when using it. If ASUS continues to perfect it, then it is possible that TUF Gaming will dominate the mainstream gaming laptop market.
