It is very important to know which ones are safe to consume …

When I talk about mushrooms you may come to mind the typical mushrooms, truffles or portobello – just think of a portobello burguer or a stirfry, it makes my mouth water- traditional mushrooms have their thing, they are high in antioxidants so they are great to support the immune system. Also, because of their texture, they are a wonderful substitute for meat. However, medicinal mushrooms are another story.

Medicinal mushrooms are different and, in fact, usually, many of them cannot be consumed as they are because they have fibers that cannot be digested by our system. It is also important to keep in mind that, although there are edible and medicinal mushrooms, others can poison you and affect your health, so it is important to know which ones are safe to consume.

Medicinal mushrooms have been used in China, Japan, Tibet, and Russia for centuries, and their health benefits are wonderful. Next, I will tell you about 3 of them that you can start adding to your life.

1. Shiitake:

The shiitake mushroom is one of the most delicious and the most popular worldwide. This one can be consumed like traditional mushrooms in stirfry, soups, stews, etc. Among its benefits is that it contains an ingredient called lentinan that is known for its great anti-inflammatory, antiviral, anti-tumor, antibacterial and antiparasitic properties. Likewise, they help lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood. You can buy them dry and soak them before consuming them, that will make them last in your pantry for several months.

2. Reishi:

Reishi mushrooms could technically be eaten, but I’m going to save you from the unpleasant sensation of their stringy texture by recommending that you use it as an herbal supplement in tea, tinctures, or powder. What do they do? They help reduce stress and anxiety while helping you feel energized and alert. Not only that, it is good for balancing your hormones. Always look for the best quality, which in your case you find in its red or purple variety.

3. Chaga:

It is one of the foods with the highest anti-inflammatory content. Chaga mushrooms must be consumed in tea or with alcohol in order to activate their beneficial components. It is popularly consumed together with tea, coffee or chocolate. Although it has extraordinary benefits and has been consumed for years, doctors recommend that people with diabetes or blood problems abstain from them as it can accentuate the effects of anticoagulant medications. Likewise, excessive use can affect the kidneys.
