Large Size But Still Slim
Acer Swift 3 is a relatively large laptop with dimensions of 18.9 x 370.5 x 255 mm and weighs up to 2.1 kg. Interestingly, this laptop is still quite thin when you see a large body.
This laptop is made entirely of metal with a dominant color combination of silver and black in some parts. The surface of the cover and inside has a brushed metal touch to give it a premium and classy feel.
One of the advantages of having a large body, Acer can embed quite a lot of ports in Swift 3. On the right there are USB 2.0 ports, SD Card, Kensington lock, and indicator lights while on the left there are 2 USB 3.0 ports, USB-C 3.1 Gen 1, HDMI and 3.5mm audio combo jack.
In addition there is WiFi 802.11ac and Bluetooth for wireless needs, but unfortunately there is no Ethernet port if you want to use an RJ45 cable for a more stable internet.
The AC Adapter port is also on the left, but I don’t really like the type of plugs that Acer chose for this laptop. The size is very small like a toothpick so that makes me a little worried that it will break or easily shake if accidentally touched.
Suitable For Enjoying Multimedia Content
Acer Swift 3 has a 15.6-inch IPS paneled screen which has a Full HD 1080p resolution. The use of IPS panels guarantees accurate colors and clear image quality. In addition, IPS also allows the screen to be viewed from various angles so that Acer makes the screen hinges open up to 180 degrees.
Using this laptop for work feels very comfortable thanks to its large screen size and 1080p resolution. This allows me to open multiple windows in Windows 10 at the same time and the content can still be seen clearly.
Problem audio, Acer Swift 3 is equipped with 2 stereo speakers that are fired through the bottom of the laptop. For the sound quality itself is fairly loud if you want to listen to music or just watch Youtube videos. But I still recommend using additional headphones myself to get the best experience.
At the same time, the Acer Swift 3 presents a full-layout keyboard including the numpad keys on the right. The distance between the keys is fairly fitting so it is comfortable to use. There is nothing special about the keyboard but it doesn’t disappoint either.
Under the keyboard there is a touchpad with a large enough area that makes it easy for the finger to move the cursor to each end of the screen. In addition to the touchpad, under the keyboard there is also a fingerprint sensor that can be used instead of a password to open the operating system.
Excellent for Work and Gaming
The Acer Swift 3 SF315-41-R9DX that I tried offers the AMD Ryzen 5 2500U Raven Ridge APU which has 4 cores and 8 threads which will be very influential for multitasking needs. The CPU itself has a maximum Boost speed of 3.6GHz.
This CPU capability can be said to be balanced with the 8th generation Core i5 so that certain performance is considered tough. In the Cinebench R15 test, this Ryzen 5 was able to achieve a value of 421 cb.
In addition to the powerful processor for multi-tasking, this laptop is also equipped with a GPU Radeon Vega 8 thanks to the design of the Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) made by AMD to provide better graphics processing capabilities than most integrated graphics. The ability of the Radeon Vega itself can be said to be slightly below the GeForce MX150.
Therefore this laptop can run all types of multimedia content smoothly. And the combination of dual-channel 8GB DDR4 RAM makes the Acer Swift 3 capable of delivering performance that can even be used to play games though.
During my use in daily activities, I did not feel any problems at all in terms of performance. Opening very many tabs in the browser simultaneously while listening to music through Spotify or Youtube can be overcome easily. Likewise, when I run an application that I use often, it works like Office or light photo editing.
Then what if the Acer Swift 3 is brought to play games? To be honest, I was quite surprised at the gaming performance that was presented considering this laptop did not have a dedicated graphics card like the Radeon RX460. Even so it turns out this laptop is able to run popular games quite smoothly.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the games that I tried because it is not only popular but it will also torture the processor because the calculation load required on open world type games is very high. This game also still has good graphics even though it was released several years ago.
With the lowest possible graphics settings and 720p resolution, GTA5 can be run very smoothly and can even touch 60 FPS in the default benchmark test. When playing real games, on average I get 35 FPS, but sometimes it can be above 50 FPS in some scenes.
Switch to lighter games, Pro Evolution Soccer 2018, Acer Swift 3, of course, can run it very well. Even with the High graphics settings, I still got more than 30 FPS during the match, even though it could drop below 20 FPS during the opening cutscene before competing.
Therefore I can say that the Acer Swift 3 is still able to be brought to play games when leisure during the game is not too heavy. Indeed, there may have to be a little compromise about the quality of graphics in some games, but that is something that is very understandable.
One thing that might slightly hamper the performance of the Acer Swift 3 is located in the type of storage. Acer provides this laptop with a 1TB 5400RPM HDD (there are other Swift 3 variants that use SSD).
Therefore the ability to transfer data provided feels insufficient to balance Ryzen 5. The process of booting the operating system is quite long for devices in its class, as well as for loading games. Even so, its performance is very qualified to be used daily basic needs.
Fair Battery Life
The use of the Ryzen 5 APU which includes the Radeon Vega will certainly use lower power than laptops that use processors and graphics cards separately. That way in theory this laptop should have above average battery life.
Through trials using PCMark 8 in Work mode that simulates the daily activities of office users, the Acer Swift 3 can last for 3 hours 38 minutes. Exceeds most mainstream laptops which usually only lasts about 2 hours.
When I use it on a daily basis, this laptop can turn on a little below the estimate, which is about 3 hours when used to work which is always connected to a WiFi ne2rk continuously.
Of course the number will be even lower if used to play games because the power needed to provide maximum performance is certainly higher.
Acer Swift 3 SF315-41-R9DX check all the boxes that I think are needed by students in general at this time. Large screen, high performance, wide storage, and battery life that can survive past the learning class.
The presence of Ryzen 5 is the main advantage of this laptop because it allows it to be used in various types of activities comfortably from just browsing the internet, enjoying multimedia content, and even being brought in to play games.
Moreover, young people often open all kinds of applications without thinking about whether the laptop is capable or not. Now the combination of APU Ryzen 5 and 8GB RAM guarantees that all types of needs can be met smoothly.
Indeed there are some things that do not suit my tastes such as the size is too large so it is more difficult to carry anywhere and the speakers can still be better. But overall Acer Swift 3 is a laptop that is suitable for use by almost every1.
