This smartphone carries attractive hardware specifications for the middle-class segment, where the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G Octa-Core chipset is trusted to be the pacemaker kitchen. Not only that, but the Galaxy A71 also relies on a Quad Camera that has a variety of functions that can make its users produce creative photos.
As a middle-class smartphone that offers a variety of features, is the Galaxy A71 worthy of choice in 2020?
Samsung Galaxy A71 comes with a 6.7-inch screen that has a Full HD + resolution (2400 x 1080 pixels) and Super AMOLED technology that is able to display content with bright and clear so that makes my eyes comfortable when I see it.
The screen itself uses the Infinity-O design which fills the front complete with punch holes on it. This makes the screen feel spacious so it makes me feel free when playing games or playing videos.
But if you feel disturbed by the punch hole, you can hide it by accessing the Hide Camera Cutout feature from the menu or the Settings application.
To minimize the occurrence of scratches on the screen, Samsung also has embedded Corning Gorilla Glass 3 scratch-resistant glass on this smartph1. I myself recommend that you coat the Galaxy A71 screen with protective glass or additional Tempered Glass to be more resistant to impact.
There is also a Blue Light Filter feature on the Galaxy A71 which can reduce blue ray radiation from the screen to protect the user’s eyes. Thanks to the use of Super AMOLED technology, fingerprint sensors can be embedded in the screen.
Compared to the previous generation Galaxy A70, the fingerprint sensor on this latest smartphone is able to respond to my fingerprint more responsively so that it can unlock the screen quickly.
Meanwhile, if the finger is dirty, then I can use Face Unlock as an alternative to unlock the screen. This feature can detect my face quickly in various light conditions. When I am in low light or dark conditions, the Galaxy A71 will increase the screen brightness so that it can detect faces easily.
At the bottom, there is a 3.5mm audio jack port, USB Type-C, and speaker holes. While the Volume and Power buttons are arranged vertically on the right side of the Galaxy A71. To the left, there are 2 SIM card slots plus a microSD.
Turning to the back, the Galaxy A71 uses a body made from polycarbonate with a diamond motif that makes it look attractive. There are three color variants that are presented on this smartphone, namely Prism Crush Black, Silver, and Blue.
I brought this product in Prism Crush Black. The back body has curves on the left and right so it makes me comfortable to hold it, even with one hand.
Unfortunately, dust and fingerprint stains easily stick to the rear body so I suggest to immediately embed additional casings that are available in the sales package.
Still on the back, there are four cameras arranged like the letter L with a combination of 64 MP main camera (f / 1.8 aperture), 5 MP secondary camera (f / 2.2 aperture), 12 MP ultrawide camera (f / 2.2 aperture), and camera macro 5 MP (aperture f / 2.4).
The main camera of the Galaxy A71 uses a GW1 sensor that is capable of producing photos up to a resolution of 64 MP. The presence of 4-in-1 pixel binning TetraCell technology makes the main camera by default will produce 16 MP resolution photos with good quality.
While this smartphone’s ultrawide camera allows me to produce photos with a wide area up to a 123 degree viewing angle. This helped me to be able to take photos with more area than the main camera.
Furthermore, the macro camera allows me to aim at objects from a very close range up to 3 cm with details that are still visible. Following the current trends, the default camera application of the Galaxy A71 is also equipped with the Night Mode feature.
But when I compared photos taken at night with Auto Mode and Night Mode, the results were not very significant even though the photos produced with Night Mode look brighter. For that, Samsung is expected to increase the ability of this feature again in the Galaxy A71.
This smartphone also has a front camera resolution of 32 MP which can produce selfies with a smooth face and can be added to the bokeh effect. Moreover, there is a wide selfie feature that allows me to produce selfies or wefies with a wider area.
Towards the hardware sector, the Galaxy A71 is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G Octa-Core 2.2 GHz chipset combined with 8GB of RAM so that it can run applications or games in multitasking smoothly without lag.
There is also an AI Game Booster feature that can improve the performance of this smartphone when I run popular games such as Mobile Legends, Arena of Valor, Free Fire, Call of Duty Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition.
Other than Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition, all of these games can be run smoothly at high graphics and frame rate settings. To make the Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition game run smoothly, I changed the frame rate and graphics to an intermediate setting.
Not to forget, I also did a performance benchmark on the Galaxy A71 by using the AnTuTu Benchmark v8.2.2 application, GeekBench 4.4.2, and Geekbench 5.1.0. This device managed to get a score of 274,722 points on AnTuTu testing.
While testing GeekBench 4.4.2, the Galaxy A71 scores 2,288 points for the Single-Core test and 6,979 points for Multi-Core. This smartphone also gets a score of 547 points for Single-Core testing and 1,725 points for Multi-Core in GeekBench 5.1.0.
Based on some of the tests above, it is proven that the Galaxy A71 is one of the powerful middle class smartphones that is able to compete with other products.
Samsung Galaxy A71 has 128 GB of internal storage so that it can store many photos, applications, games, music, videos, and documents at once. Despite its large internal capacity, Samsung still presents a microSD slot of up to 512 GB in this product.
The source of life energy of this smartphone is entrusted to the 4,500mAh battery. With that much battery capacity, the Samsung Galaxy A71 managed to get a score of 16 hours 44 minutes on battery life testing using the PC Mark for Android application with Work 2.0 battery life mode where the battery condition is 100% and the screen brightness level is 50%.
Whereas when I use it for daily activities, this device can last for 18 hours 17 minutes with Screen on Time reaching 12 hours.
From testing with benchmark applications and daily usage, it appears that the Galaxy A71 has a long battery life. Unfortunately, I could not test the charging speed of the battery because the Galaxy A71 unit that I tried was present without a charger and data cable.
Galaxy A71 itself has used the One UI 2.0 interface system based on the Android 10 operating system. The interface of the One UI 2.0 looks cleaner than the Samsung Experience UI.
Interestingly, the bloatware that is presented on this interface system is less than the previous generation. I can even delete some bloatware that I don’t think is important. One UI 2.0 feels light when I navigate to switch between applications or menus on the Galaxy A71 smartph1.
Based on 2 weeks of usage, I feel that the Galaxy A71 offers powerful performance, long battery life, and four multifunction rear cameras.
While the fingerprint sensor and Face Unlock feature of the Galaxy A71 feels more responsive than previous generation Samsung smartphones. I can also check or fill in e-money thanks to the presence of NFC sensors on this product.
Although the design behind it is monotonous, but I can hold this smartphone comfortably even though it only uses one hand.
Unfortunately, the Galaxy A71 is not equipped with waterproof capability. But these shortcomings can be remedied if you look at the features and specifications of the hardware it has.
